Sandlot is back

GMLB Sandlot Baseball

SANDLOT is BACKfor 2025!

Inaugural Sandlot Baseball

Welcome to the GMLB Sandlot baseball for ages 6-12 (birthdate as of 4/30/2025).

When will sandlot baseball?

Sandlot Baseball will run most TUESDAY nights from July 1 to August 26 2025. Time will likely be 5:30 PM on Lunt 2 and Lunt 3 (depending on attendance). . Dates will be in the Calendar on www.gmlb.org

What does Sandlot mean?

Simply, it is baseball in an open, non-league environment where players just go out and play a pick-up game of baseball with their friends! Players would meet at the Sandlot, aka Lunt Fields, and just play ball. Players arrive, teams are picked, and players play and have a blast! We may use several fields if enough players show up. Players will simply show up on Sandlot nights, then divide the players up into teams, work on skills and batting cages with anyone that wants to and play a sandlot game of baseball. Each week, the players will be divided into different teams. There are no set teams.

Why is the league doing this?

Simply to keep kids interested in baseball for the rest of the year and develop their skills for the next season. And to do it in a fun, less organized way. The more hours spent playing baseball will improve any of the players. And even some players that were not sure about returning or whom did not play this season, may see how fun baseball can be……..But mostly this is for fun.

Will we keep score?

Yes. But just for fun. Teams will change week to week depending on how many kids show up. We will keep score and have outs. A board member and group of coaches will run the game to assure all is fair and supervised. However, this is just for fun. And a lot we will leave to the players to help form how the games are played. And players will help other players improve. Older kids will help with younger less experienced kids. That’s how pickup games work.

Are there uniforms? Is there a fee?

No uniforms, no extra fees. Players just come in their regular season baseball uniform and play ball. If the weather is extremely hot, shorts are allowed. Regular season Jersey or Tournament Jersey helps for the coaches that may not know your child and can go by the number or name on back.

Do players have to come every week?

No, come as many times as you can. It’s the summer so players, people and coaches will not make every week.

Do you have to be a GMLB player to play? What are the age limits?

Yes, for insurance purposes. But for those that are not currently, we can sign them up. Perhaps they will fully join our league the following year. Ages ideally are for 7-12 (in past season most have been from 8-10 or 11)….. As this will be player pitched (for the most part), players should have at least played AA ball during the regular season or feel comfortable being pitched to play in the pickup games.

Can parents help coach?

No. Just like the regular season, to help on the field you must be certified by Babe Ruth/ Sportsengine, but if you are interested and were looking to help multiple times, we could investigate signing you up, especially if you are interested in being a manager or assistant coach the following year. But there are many things’ parents can help with off the field. (Organization, Possible Concessions? Trash, Registering kids not in league, etc). If you’re interested in registering as a coach, please email gmlbsuhl@gmail.com (it will take a few days to a week or two).

Will there be other things at the field?

While this is mostly baseball, yes, there could be other things. Wiffle ball, races…anything they might do for fun is a possibility, but baseball is the main goal. And the batting cage will be open along with coaches to work on specific skills like pitching and catching.

Are there any other rules?

Any rules and guidelines will be gone over at the beginning (each week if necessary), but all batters must wear a helmet, all catchers must wear catching gear. Any players “coaching a base” must wear a helmet. We would suggest players wear their league jerseys (since names are on the back)…. We suggest uniform pants too, but some days may be hot, so if shorts are worn just make sure players are cautious with sliding.

Is there something for the rookies?

Sure, while they may not be quite ready for the Pickup Sandlot game (but they might), it is a good time to come and play catch with other kids, and work in the batting cage, etc. If enough do come, they might have enough for their own pickup game or play wiffle ball.

If there is a rainout, or other changes, where will they be posted?

Any changes or updates will be posted on our Facebook page. An email may go out, but depending on timing, it may not.

Sincerely,

GMLB Baseball
